TO AVOID THIEVES: On New years' day, take the nest of a magpie, burn it to ash and scatter indoors. This will keep off robbers. Others say making the doorbolt 拴 out of chesnut wood 栗木 will keep thieves far away. If a door is made on the day of the water ox (Guichou) in the 12th month, thieves will be unable to enter it.
