FORMULAE FOR DIVINING THE CLIMATE BASED ON THE WIND AND CLOUDS OF NEW YEARS DAY

( from the 崇福堂 almanac of Taiwan. )

正月初一元旦平旦 At Daybreak, on the first day of the first month, 西風,發生蟲。 [If there is]a Western wind, there will be worms 北風,豆收秋雨多 Northern wind: harvest of beans, much rain in autumn 東風,麥收秋澇 East wind: Wheat harvested, flood in autumn 東北風,小收,民疫 Northeast wind: Small harvest; sickness of people 東南風,五穀平收,六月多風 Southeast wind: Five grains average harvest; much wind in the 6th month 南風,旱五月穀貴。 South wind: Drought in 5th month; grains expensive 西南風宜早禾牛羊瘴民病。 Southwest wind: Suitable for Early Rice; sickness amongst cows, sheep & people. 正月初一元旦,平旦至午無風,宜早禾。 If on the first day of the year, there is no wind from Dawn to midday, it is suitable for early rice 午至晚無風,宜晚禾。 If there is no wind from midday to night, it is good for late rice. 東方黑雲,春雨多 If there are black clouds in the East, much rain in spring 青雲,民饑,多刑獄。 Azure/green青 clouds: famine amongst the people, much punishment and prison 白雲喪服 White clouds, mourning 南方黑雲,夏雨多。 Black clouds in the south, much rain in summer 赤雲,旱五月,見六月雨足。 Red clouds: drought in the 5th month, but enough rain come the 6th month 西方黑雲秋雨多 Black clods in the west: much rain in autumn 間白雲秋月民不安靜 As for white clouds: in the autumn months, the people would be unquiet
