Anti-hunting mantras

In this post I include two short religious rituals from the "All Encompassing knowledge" Tongtian xiao 通天曉, a 19thc book of secrets. https://books.google.ch/books?id=uAA9AQAAIAAJ&dq=%E8%A1%8C%E5%BB%9A%E9%9B%86&hl=de&pg=PP918#v=onepage&q&f=false

Buddhism abhors taking of life, much more so the taking of life for pleasure in the form of hunting. Accordingly methods were devised to stop this practise, which are described here. To the author's knowledge, these rituals are not used in modern Buddhism, either due to the decline in hunting or the ethical problems of using such mantras (eg causing a subsistence hunter's family to starve)

MANTRA TO SAVE FISHES AND BIRDS : If you encounter a person fishing or hunting birds, silently chant the words (Namo Ratnasambhava Buddha) seven times. The Fish or bird will escape.
Again, If you see a person with a fishing rod or net, silently and sincerely recite the 揭諦 "Jiedi" mantra seven times. He will catch nothing in the end.

Note: The "Jiedi" mantra here is almost certainly the mantra in the heart sutra, which in chinese is

jiedi jiedi buoluojiedi buoluosengjiedi putisapohe

MANTRA TO SAVE FISHES AND BIRDS: If you see a person fishing or hunting birds, concentrate on that person: do not give rise to any other thoughts, and [whilst doing so] recite the name of [the following] Buddhas, ten times, or a hundred times, the more the better. 念曰
The Buddhas' names are:

南無多寶如來
Namo Many treasures Buddha
Namo Treasure Victory Buddha
Namo Fine Body Buddha
Namo Expansive Body Buddha
Namo Leaving from fear Buddha
Namo Amrit King Buddha
Namo Amithaba Buddha
(This should be sincerely, copiously, and silently chanted)

Note: The seven buddhas in the mantra are invoked in preta-feeding ceremonies, like the Mengshan Food bestowal For more about such rituals see Hun Yeow Lye's PHD thesis feeding ghosts

Interestingly, according to Lama Zopa Rinpoche, chanting the name of Leaving-from-fear Buddha allowed a rabbit to escape a coyote's clutches! https://www.lamayeshe.com/article/sur-commentary-practicing-aroma-charity-spirits
