A RECORD OF SALVATION BY GUANYIN

A RECORD OF SALVATION BY GUANYIN
A Strange story of karma and a crime of passion
By Master Zhuyun

This is the longest, and perhaps the most harrowing miracle tale I have translated to date. The tale is as much a story about the miraculous power of Guanyin, as it is a tale about the violence of borders and patriarchy, The tale is best left to speak for itself.

I have taken the text from here http://www.book853.com/show.aspx?id=1765&cid=26&page=19 I have scanned booklets of the tale here https://archive.org/details/images_20230707_1441 and here https://archive.org/details/images_20221007

A Poor wife slaughtered; Guanyin comes to save from hardship.
Cause and effect can never be averted; Let all marvel at this

When I was last at mount Yuemei in keelung transmitting the precepts, Householder Yang Xiuhe 楊秀鶴 approached me and said “Master, your book Miracles of Moun Putuo has been read and praised by practically everyone, and has moved goodness knows how many people to convert to Buddhism.

Now I have a true story, about how the Great One Guanyin can save from hardship and danger. If you are free, I will bring that old lady to tell it to you herself. With your flowery pen, you can write this tale elegantly and publish it in the Buddhist magazines, to better transmit the compassion and virtue of the Great One--- and also let people know how terrifying the law of cause and effect are.”

I was intrigued by her absolute astonishment and sincerity, and felt that I had excellent material on my hands, and an most astonishing story of Ganying—or else why would Householder Yang view this tale so highly. I agreed to her proposal, saying “Lets find a quiet spot; you bring that old lady here, and let her tell her story to me. I will write it down and send it to the publishers”

Householder Yang delightedly called the old lady. She [came over] and told her story as follows.

1. An unfortunate poor woman, Widowed too soon

Householder Yang helped that old lady- who was in her sixties- to the seat, and said “Here is the female protagonist in this crime of passion. She has shown me each and every one of my scars. Please invite her to tell you her story, and I will translate” [perhaps because she spoke in a topolect Master did not understand—ed.] I happily took on the role of a reporter, and tool down the the important points on the scene. Out of prudence and faith, I asked her to tell me her age, place of birth, and address.

This old lady was called Chen Meiyue. She was from Yongchun in Fujian, and was now 66 years old. She was now living in no 8 Renai street, Keelung, Bo’ai gardens 3rd floor (a charitable organisation). This is her story,

“Master, I am a woman whose life has been hard and whose sins are great. When I was 23 years old, I followed my husband form Fujian across the ocean to Taiwan, to find a living. A few years after we arrived, my husband unfortunately contracted an incurable lung disease. He was sick for many years, and as a result every cent we had saved was wiped out.

When I was 32, my long-suffering husband finally died. He was formerly a labourer; he contracted the disease from exhaustion. With a son and daughter hanging on, I was watching over my dead husband. This is a bitter life—as bitter as bitter can be

When my husband died, the coffin and burial fees were paid by his friends. After my husband died, I relied on my uncle and aunt堂叔堂嬸, who let me live in their home for two years. But even his family was poor, and he could no longer support us.

Me and my two children had to find a living. My 10-year-old-son every day went out to pick charcoal and other such hard jobs for a living. I myself tried to find a way to endure the hardship and raise my children. The [children’s] paternal uncle could not bear to see the children suffer, starve and freeze, and so counsel me to remarry, and find a husband to adopt them. With my uncle as a matchmaker, he found a person born in Taiwan (Benshengren) , called Huang Shiliang. We lived together for two years. We lived peacefully for several years. Even though our lives weren’t perfect, we could at least survive, and our children had to suffer less.

During the Japanese Colonisation, I was a Mainlander (Waishengren ) and could not be legally married to a Benshengren. We were registered in our Hukou as “cohabiting” and could not be considered a proper wife. Because of this hukou problem, my husband was vexed for many years, exhausting every solution to no avail. Because Huang’s elder brother was a scrivener 代書 he knew this was impossible, and so encouraged him to reject this woman, and take another benshengren as a wife.

Being impossible to register, he slew his wife in anger.

Because he could not be registered, people laughingly told him “You helped raise someone else’s children for goodness knows how long, and yet in spite of this you are not a true head of a household. Cohabiting with someone cannot be said to be creating a family. Why don’t you marry another maiden benshengren to be a wife?” He then said to them “Meiyue cannot allow me to registered, let them see what I can do”. Someone else told me “You are unwilling to marry another, and this woman cannot become your true wife. What can you do?” He replied ‘I will kill her. I will not give her to another’

It was lively on the Mid-autumn festival, but when he came back there was something off about his expression. This was because someone had already secretly told me of his plan to kill me. At night he told me “We lived as husband and wife for these years, we loved one another. It is just this problem about the hukou. Well, that is a problem of our country’s laws. What can we do to change that? Don’t vent your anger on me. I heard people say you want to kill me. Is that true?” He replied “Nothing of that sort. This is someone joking with you. We are living together as husband and wife, why should I kill you? Don’t listen to them”. I said “That is also what I thought. Your [step]son and daughter all treat you so well, hukou or no hukou, what is the problem”. From this I thought that there was nothing wrong, and decided not to think about it either.

Destroy the roots when cutting the grass:* A murder in the night

  • This is a Chinese proverb equivalent to the English “Nits will become lice” – ed.

For whatever reason, on the night of the 25th, when I and my children were fast asleep, he woke up – I don’t know what time—and took a Japanese bayonet- and madly stabbed my abdomen thrice. My intestines spilt out from the wound. One wound severed my intestines, and the shit in my intestines all spilled out from them. My two arms and shoulders were stabbed at least 10 times. At that time, I did not feel any pain, and did not know what happened. Later I heard him say “When cutting the grass, you must get rid of the roots—I will not leave a single member of this family”

He then slaughtered my fourteen-year-old daughter. At that time, my daughter’s injuries were very severe. She thought of jumping from a building, and she did jump from the building. She did not live long after that. My son, on seeing that me and his sister were both slaughtered, was shocked into a daze. I had also lost all sense of self-preservation, and told my son to run for his life. At that moment, he then took the knife and ran after my son, intending to butcher him. I tried to snatch the knife away from him, and as such my hand was sliced by the knife. (Although my hand is now recovered, I cannot extend my fingers anymore). My son finally escaped the beast’s clutches and shouted for help and the police. When He saw that people were coming, he though to kill himself, but he was unable to wound himself severely. As such people wrestled the knife from him, whilst another shouted for the police. At around four, the police finally came.

At that time, I did not know how severe my injuries were. All I was thinking about was my daughter’s death. At that time, a bystander pointed to me and said “Look at yourself! Your whole body is covered in blood. Look! Blood is everywhere around you! You cannot possibly survive this”. Once the bystander said those words, did I begin to feel pain. All the blood in my body had flowed out by this point, and at that moment I collapsed. The police quickly sent me to the hospital. They sent me to a private hospital, but they were unwilling to accept me. My wounds were not fully sewed up by this point. After sucking on air for four hours, the [public?] hospital opened at seven. They finally arranged for the operation at eleven, and it was only then that they sewed up my wounds.

The hospital head wanted to do a blood test on me, but he could not take blood from my two ears. Indeed, not a single drop of blood came out of my body, because it had all drained out. When they were sewing up my intestines, they realized my intestines were severed; and because the urine flowed out form my intestines, they were rotted in some places. Because of this, he got annoyed and just stuffed my guts back into my body, and sewed me up, [saying] I would not live for but a few hours. They then placed me into the quiet room, for me to await death. The killer also tried to commit suicide with two stabs. His injuries were being tended to in the next room. Someone asked him ‘Why did you want to kill your wife’. He had nothing to say in response ‘That woman is a bad woman. I absolutely will kill her. All I want to know is if she might survive’. The person next to him said ‘definitely not. The hospital head said she will be dead by eleven tonight’. As I was next door, I heard every word they said. He used those wicked words to insult me. I wanted to rip open my stitches, so I could die a bit quicker. But at this point I had absolutely no strength left; I could not even move. All I could do was think. Later I heard a woman who was overseeing the nurses take a look at the clock and say ‘that woman cannot possibly live past 11:20. Carefully watch her time’ That woman even shouted for her husband to come to her, so they could both wait for me to die

I did not know how much longer I had to live. I sighed at my bitter fate, but by now not even tears could flow. At that moment the man and woman who came to watch over me slowly drifted off to sleep. They were completely irresponsible! Let’s see how they would’ve reported it to their superiors if I had died at that moment! The minutes slowly passed; and soon I was not more than half an hour from my death. At that moment I suddenly thought of the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva, and started to chant the mantra of the White Robed Great One. In the past I had taken refuge in the three jewels, and took a vegetarian diet—so you could say I was a bit of a Buddhist. But now, I met this catastrophe and will die just like that! If I met my end like this, I feared that nobody after me would believe in Buddhism, or take refuge in Buddhism. Indeed, they will indeed laugh at Buddhism, thinking that believing in the buddha and taking refuge are useless. Because of this, stilled my mind, shut my eyes, and chanted the name “I take refuge in the most compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara” about 20 or so times.

At that point the miracle happened. I suddenly became aware that the room had changed. I opened my eyes and noticed that there was not a person in the room, but it was filled with light. Suddenly I saw Guanyin standing before me. Behind the Bodhisattva were standing innumerable persons, all of them holding their palms together and chanting the Buddha’s name for me. The Bodhisattva held something like a banana leaf in hand and gave it to me. I thought “Why would she give me a banana leaf?” the Bodhisattva said “This is a plantain leaf, not a banana leaf. This treasure does not exist in the world, and it is not the same as worldly plantain leaves” I suddenly felt my body relax. I then said ‘Ah! It does not exist in the world! How wonderful!”. Because of this I fell asleep soundly until daybreak. All my pains had disappeared, but I felt I had no energy.

The next day, the Taibei court sent forensic doctors to examine me. The hospital reported I would be dead by 11:20 PM, but I was not dead. The hospital had previously predicted the time a person would die. They were extremely accurate, and had up till this point never missed the mark. I had no reason to be not dead, but yet I was alive. This shocked them. The Keelung Head of Department came down, and said to me personally “You must’ve done something good in the past; a god is protecting you. Given you wounds, there’s a 120% chance you would’ve died. However, you are alive. You did not die when you should’ve: you are a really lucky person”.

When I heard the Head of Department say I was a really lucky person. I thought of my life, which was nothing but hardship—and now, my family destroyed. I started to cry. The Head of Department told me not to cry. He said “your guts are already rotten. You should not move. You must not be sad. Your daughter has already recovered”. I said “Don’t lie to me. My daughter’s waist was sliced through. She has already been cremated. I know it all”. He said “Since you know it, I will not deceive you. You are lucky. Your daughter is not. I will use my own money to treat you. According to what the doctor told me, your stomach and intestines were broken, and could not be saved. Your stomach was broken, and the excrement all flowed out; and as such they rotted, and were broken. Yet you didn’t die. This is indeed a miracle. You are really lucky indeed”. For that reason, during the Chinese New Year period, the Head of Department would send a person to present gifts to me, and comfort me.

The murderer was evil: he still wanted to kill.

When the killer first heard I would not survive that night, he was at ease: He did not have a single but of remorse, but instead singleheartedly wished for my death. After these two days he asked the overseer of nurses “That night—at 11 o’clock. Was the women dead or not?”. The nurse said “Its really weird. Not only did she not die, but her wounds are healing! She is now recovering from her wounds over there, and she is not in pain”. He spluttered in hatred “That time I couldn’t kill her. I will try again. I will use a knife to hack off her head. Let’s she if she can recover from that”. The Hospital orderly in fear decided to shift the killer to another room. But he still wanted to kill me, [and so shackled him to the bed]. One day he discovered I was upstairs. He said “I may not have a knife, but I will use my [shackles] to reopen her wounds and draw out her intestines. Let’s see if she will die or not”. One day he actually did succeed in climbing upstairs, but fortunately he was discovered and he was driven back and locked up. After he recovered he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

If you want to understand the present fruits
Just look at the past causes.

After I recovered from this assault and was discharged, I often would cry uncontrollably before the Great One Guanyin. I thought “I have not done anything bad in this life—why must I suffer these pains? My husband’s early death led me to this poisonous man- why would he try to kill me so cruelly? My fourteen-year-old daughter also met this catastrophe. All my family who [were fated to] die are already dead; who were [fated to be] wounded are already wounded. The man who was the head of this family was imprisoned for 15 years. That was deserved, as he committed a crime, but why must I suffer these blows? What wicked deed did I perform in my past life? I begged the Bodhisattva to show it to me.

One day when I was reciting the name of the Buddha, I entered into a trance. I saw myself turn into a prince. He was holding a bow and arrow. Beside him was another person- perhaps his manservant. he saw an orang-outan . The prince took aim at the orang-outan, and shot it. The person following the prince chased after the ape, and dragged it off to be killed. Not after that, I then saw an orang-outan wanting nothing but revenge. I ran away. The orang-outan then chased me, and I jumped into the water. It held onto my head, wanting to strangle me. I then recited the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva, the saviour from hardship and difficulty. At that moment the Great One manifested herself, and shouted to the animal “You are an animal, and still want to harm people”. The ape placed its palms together. The great one took it, and said ‘Lock it up for 8 years. If it can reform then let it out’. The great one left, and I woke up in a start. This was like a dream but not a dream; this was clearly the Great One showing my past life to me.

I was that prince, my daughter was the manservant, and the ape was the man, and that orang-outan was the man who tried to kill me. It was I who shot the orang-outan, and my manservant who killed the orang-outan. For that reason, the man who killed my daughter and tried to kill me, was the revenge of the orang-outan; The orang-outan trying to drown me in the wate, this time [appeared as] the man trying to kill me in the hospital. The strangest thing was this: although the man was sentenced to 15 years, he was only in jail for 8 years. Owing to a general pardon he was released. This was exactly as Guanyin Bodhisattva said when she took away the ape “Lock it up for 8 years, after its reformed, let it out”. This sort of cause and effect does not miss the mark by even a hair. As such I knew: in my previous life I was a hunter, goodness knows how many lives did I harm. For that reason, I now suffer these hardships. That was the result of my sins. It is only through sincere belief in the buddha, would my disasters be dispelled and my sins lessened.

Sixteen operations, big and small .

Because my intestines were not properly placed in my body; in some places there were more, and in other places there were voids. As such, even after I recovered, eating and coughing would bring me a lot of suffering. Sometimes when I turned my body over in sleeping, my guts would roil around in my body. I thus asked the doctor, who said “Because at that time, I thought you will die, so I just shoved your intestines back into your body and sewed them back in” Because of this problem, I eventually underwent three large operations, and thirteen smaller ones. Even an ordinary person would hardly escape death with three large operations, but not only did I not die, the operations did not cause me pain. Or was this my karma?

Because I was poor, I had no money for the doctor. The doctor was also unethical; Every time he opened my stomach, he pulled open my intestines. He cut out whatever bad patches of the intestines, and sewed the rest back together. Because of this, my intestines got shortened; and I didn’t feel well even when I returned. Three wounds inflicted on me, and three operations opened on me; I had 13 wounds on my body, and underwent 13 minor operations. This was because at that time I was not subject to careful medical attention, and so these problems arose, needing further operations.

The Bodhisattva gave me an injection in my dream.

Although I underwent numerous operations to cure my illness, because I did not have any money, the doctors were not enthusiastic. Most of my illnesses were cured by the Bodhisattva in my dreams. A great deal of thread and gauze entered my intestines, and despite frequent medical interventions, they were unable to get rid of it. I too gave up on this, and just begged the Great One to save me from my ills. Because of the numerous surgeries, my wounds became inflamed. I dreamt the Bodhisattva gave me an injection- I saw him using a very large needle to pierce me, and a large amount of white stuff flowed out. The next day, I was got better. This happened multiple times. I will never forget the kindness the Bodhisattva gave to me. All in all, I wish the master will be compassionate, and write down this story for the world to know, and let everyone know the practise of chanting the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva.

Reader, do not take this lightly!

This was what I personally witness. She showed all her wounds to me. In truth, when I saw them, I was most frightened. The Bodhisattva’s response is truly remarkable; it is note something that can be imagined by man. She told this story in two hours, and I was utterly absorbed by it. Householder Yang said to me “She is now very devout; she was initially completely illiterate, but someone gave her a copy of the Lotus Sutra—now she can chant the Flower Ornament Sutra”. The buddha dharma is truly remarkable. I hope that he reader shall not take this as an idle tale. Let us all chant NAMO GUANSHIYN PUSA!
